The FT’s recent analysis of the impact of recession on the pace of change in media and advertising was as you’d expect ‘on the money’. They recognise that not unlike the music industry the impact of the internet is having a seismic impact on how media owners and agencies do business. It was also a seminal moment for us as they picked Albion as the reference point for the future model agency which is navigating all this disruption and  seeking out new approaches to marketing our Client’s businesses.  Have a read of the article here and let us know your thoughts.

Picture-009Thursday saw the latest meeting of the Albion Society, our regular series of breakfast talks from our network of interesting, entrepreneurial people. This time we ‘Herd’ from Mark Earls, the Herdmeister himself. It’s definitely worth a read. If you came along hopefully you’ll be half way through your complimentary edition by now, those of you who missed out it can be bought on Amazon for a mere £6.99!

Mark has a really big idea that totally challenges all our received, western cultural assumptions: That, while we like to believe we act as individuals, in reality humans are ‘herd’ animals, and we mostly do what we see other people doing; we copy.

By the time he’d had us waggling our fingers, doing a Mexican Wave, and wrestling with each other, it was pretty clear that he’s right. And that 60 years of advertising convention is pretty wrong. Our strategy director Glyn then went on to show how we’re using Mark’s ideas as we continue to define a new marketing model, and a new kind of agency to deliver it. One good example of this is the launch of giffgaff for O2, another is our promotion of Skype on mobile phones via Skype Nomad.

We’ll announce the next meeting soon; drop us a note if you would like to come along.

And best of all, Mike the Gaffer’s live call into Chris Evans’ show. In true brand style it wasn’t from a plush recording suite but live from Albion:

Today we’ve given birth to giffgaff.

giffgaff

It’s a new model within the mobile phone market inspired by internet phenomena like Wikipedia, where people work together to achieve things better and cheaper than big companies can.

We call it people-powered.

Because giffgaff’s customers do some of the work, they can keep their costs low. And the more customers get involved, the more they get back. Customers can get involved in many different ways, such as referring a friend, voting on business decisions, or answering questions on the customer forum. In return they will be rewarded with up to a 100 per cent rebate. Or if they just want to use the service without worrying about it, they can as it will run on the O2 network.

The idea came from Gav Thompson, one of the O2 brand team and a friend of the giffgaff CEO Mike Fairman’s. He was very excited about the possibilities of a potential new business model, and together they thought it would be
great to apply the principles of web culture to a mobile network operation. The O2 board who loved it and decided it was strong enough to become a company in its own right.

We’ve been involved from soon after the inception of the business, working on the business strategy as well as the naming, web design and usability, comms planning and brand strategy. We’ve had a dedicated war-room within the agency as even people here not working on the business haven’t been able to know anything about it.

Over the course of the launch we’ve been working in partnership with Splendid Communications, SomeOne and Zenith.

The SIM-only service will launch fully before Xmas and we’ll be doing some great people-powered comms for it. Until then you can find out more about us at giffgaff.com

We’re very excited to announce that we are now working with super fast ISP brand BE. You may have seen the news in Campaign Magazine.

BE drive innovation in the broadband market delivering unreal ADSL bandwidth. Their current audience tends to be real web pioneers – your tech friend in the know will have heard if them. Our task is to communicate the great benefits of Be to wider audience. If you whack in your phone number you can get a speed quote on their site.

We’ve already started work with BLM and 33 Digital on a number of campaigns. The first will focus on getting students up to speed (cough) in September.
