Thursday saw the latest meeting of the Albion Society, our regular series of breakfast talks from our network of interesting, entrepreneurial people. This time we ‘Herd’ from Mark Earls, the Herdmeister himself. It’s definitely worth a read. If you came along hopefully you’ll be half way through your complimentary edition by now, those of you who missed out it can be bought on Amazon for a mere £6.99!
Mark has a really big idea that totally challenges all our received, western cultural assumptions: That, while we like to believe we act as individuals, in reality humans are ‘herd’ animals, and we mostly do what we see other people doing; we copy.
By the time he’d had us waggling our fingers, doing a Mexican Wave, and wrestling with each other, it was pretty clear that he’s right. And that 60 years of advertising convention is pretty wrong. Our strategy director Glyn then went on to show how we’re using Mark’s ideas as we continue to define a new marketing model, and a new kind of agency to deliver it. One good example of this is the launch of giffgaff for O2, another is our promotion of Skype on mobile phones via Skype Nomad.
We’ll announce the next meeting soon; drop us a note if you would like to come along.
